Alabama Beaches Travel Guide: Easy Flights from Wisconsin + Fishing, Food & Things to do.
If you would’ve told me I could go from Midwest lakes to saltwater fishing in just a few hours… I probably would’ve packed sooner.
Our trip to the Alabama Beaches was the perfect mix of easy travel, great fishing, and some of the best seafood I’ve ever had—and the best part? It was way simpler than I expected.
✈️ Getting There: Direct & Easy from Wisconsin
One of the biggest highlights of this trip was how easy it was to get there.
We flew direct from Appleton International Airport to the Gulf Shores, AA area with Allegiant Air, which made the whole experience feel effortless.
No long layovers
No complicated travel days
Just a quick flight and you’re suddenly in flip-flops instead of boots
For anyone in Wisconsin or the Midwest, this is honestly a game changer.
Where We Stayed: Beachball Properties
If you’re planning a trip to the Alabama Beaches, where you stay honestly makes a huge difference—and this one was such a win for us.
We stayed with Beachball Properties, and they have a ton of different options depending on what kind of trip you’re after—beachfront condos, houses for bigger groups, or quieter spots tucked away from the crowds.
We stayed in Hermit Crab #7, and I’d book it again in a heartbeat.
It was perfectly located—just a short, easy walk to the beach (which is huge when you’re hauling rods, chairs, and all the extra stuff that somehow comes with a “quick” beach day). But what really made it stand out was the other side of the property…
There’s a pier overlooking Little Lagoon, and it quickly became one of our favorite spots to unwind. Morning coffee out there, sunset views, even just sneaking out for a few quiet minutes.
Hermit Crab #7 honestly felt like the best of both worlds:
Quick beach access for fishing and hanging out
A quieter lagoon-side escape when you want to slow things down
If you’re looking for a place that’s convenient but still feels like a getaway, this was exactly that.
🌴 First Impressions of the Alabama Beaches
Even with rainy weather on our first day, the vibe was immediate.
We spent the afternoon exploring:
Local shops and beach stores
Grabbing essentials at Walmart
Checking out spots like Ducks Diner, BeachBum Outdoors, and The Yard
That night we met up at The Beachhouse Kitchen and Cocktails and kicked things off with:
A top-tier Bushwacker (think adult milkshake 😏)
Bama Rolls- think egg roll but with pulled pork, aged cheddar and house bbq sauce
Blackened redfish
Not a bad way to start.
🎣 Fishing the Alabama Beaches: Charter vs DIY
This is where Alabama Beaches really shines—whether you’re booking a trip or figuring it out yourself, the fishing opportunities are endless. We were lucky enough to experience both!
🚤 Charter Fishing Experience
We booked a charter with Blake from Reel Red Charters, and it did NOT disappoint.
Target: Redfish
Bait: Alewives
Result: Chaos (the good kind)
If you want:
Guidance
Consistent action
A shot at bigger fish
👉 A charter is 100% worth it.
🏖️ DIY Beach Fishing
We also spent multiple days fishing straight from the beach—and honestly, this might surprise people:
You can catch fish RIGHT from shore. It’s a nice and laid back way to still wet a line but feel like you are on vacation chilling on a beach.
We stopped at J&M Tackle to get set up and talk with Chris, which made a huge difference.
What we caught:
Whiting
A spot
Watched a black drum and stingray landed nearby
Even with wind and changing weather, we were consistently getting bites.
👉 If you’re a Midwest angler wanting to try saltwater without a boat—this is your place.
🍤 The Food Scene (Seriously… Unreal)
I don’t say this lightly—the food alone is worth the trip.
Some standout meals:
Blackened triggerfish
Royal Reds (10/10, no notes)
Another elite Bushwacker
Blackened cobia
Surf N’ Turf burger - Alabama Wagyu and Maine Lobster with American cheese…my mind was blown
Local favorites & quick stops
Vinny’s Pizza
Island Time (drinks)
Island Ice Cream (ridiculously good)
Happy Pappys Coffee House (perfect send-off morning)
Everything felt fresh, local, and very seafood-forward.
🛍️ Things to Do Beyond Fishing
When you’re not fishing (or eating), there’s still plenty to do:
Shopping at The Wharf
Exploring Lake Shelby
Beachfront walks
Local boutiques and coastal shops
The area is super easy to navigate, which makes it perfect for a relaxed trip.
